The Drive - Excellent authors...no good comment system or user base.
the spot.im system isn’t even a bad system but there is nobody talking on The Drive. I don’t know if that translates to views or not but it sure makes for a boring place to spend any time. Its really too bad too because there are a lot of excellent authors over there.

for all its faults, and how much the site owners probably hate it...places like Oppo and systems like kinja that give the user a reason to invest in their properties are what keeps the boat floating

I agree,
Back in November when shit went down, I spent some time on The Drive to see if it was a replacement for Oppo and the FP for me . For all the reasons you mention, it isn’t.

I’ve made a few attempts at The Drive over the last few years. Their layout makes no sense to me, and the commenting is worthless. Good content, but their UI keeps me from staying.

Yeah the lack of commenting on The Drive is one of my few reasons for sticking around Jalopnik and Oppo. I comment on The Drive but very rarely because I don’t want to be the only comment on every single article ...
